Enhanced keyboards supplement missing functionality to the regular computer keyboard. Each key on an enhanced keyboard can be configured to output a string of characters or commands to the computer. An enhanced keyboard can be used in conjunction with a standard computer keyboard or stand alone. The benefits from an enhanced keyboard are only limited by the ingenuity of the typist.

A number of examples of where an enhanced keyboard can be employed include:

* Call centers — to quickly insert data into fields in a form and move between programs and options.

* Medical transcription – typing lengthy and complicated medical description is time consuming and may result in typing errors. Programming different keys to type these phrases decreases mistakes and speeds up data entry.

* Quality control — simplify the entry of numbers and at the same time reducing errors.

* Assembly lines — quickly allow employees to enter important data regarding their work. Data such as downtime, defects and shift data is instantly and correctly entered.

* Point-of-sale – allows all programs to have the advantages of a fast food sales pad.

* Games — use one key to instantly enter commands into a game.

A unique example of where I have employed an enhanced keyboard is in writing computer programs. A lot of the programming code consists of command statements. A few examples include if, while, repeat statements. A lot of typing consists of constantly typing the boiler plate of these commands. I configured the keys on my enhanced keyboard to enter the boiler plate of the commands. Thus leaving me free to concentrate on the rest of my programming.

The versatility of an enhanced keyboard increase the convenience any software. All the program receives is data it recognizes came from a typical keyboard and it responds appropriately.
