In order to maintain productivity and morale, it’s important for management to celebrate your teams work as you go through organizational change and challenges. The economy will bounce back. You and your team must continue to affirm your work to stay on target.
During economic challenges, when results aren’t as frequent or as big as usual, you must celebrate the work that you and your team do. That’s right, not the result, celebrate the work. The work gets us to the result. Celebrating the accomplishment of doing good work, affirms the habit to keep doing it.
During the good times as well as the challenges, you want your team to perform well, right? If so, you need to let them know. In addition, the benefit is that you will boost morale and give evaluations at the same time.
This lets your team know how they are doing. Employees don’t want to be in the dark about their performance. This communication opening opportunity gives you a chance to evaluate and interact with them more.
My dad was a student leader of the civil rights movement in Atlanta, GA in the 1960′s. Many years ago, he wrote an article about the importance of celebrating small successes along the way. The students involved in the movement then were creating a new phenomenon, with no guarantees of when they would see a result. Can you imagine going in a direction like this? There would be a lot of disappointment a no result. That would need balance to see the bright side of things and keep the other students engaged in this feat. It was important to celebrate the small successes.
The same is true today. We are waiting for more tangible signs of recovery. We don’t know when it’s going to be as strong as it was. Predicting a precise date is futile. However, as we wait we need confirmation along the way that our work is on target.
Keeping the organization motivated during these challenges is important. Leaders, you want your team to perform in good times and bad, right? I challenge you to celebrate the good work that your team performs.
As your organization goes through these economic challenges and organizational change, management remember to celebrate your team’s work to keep morale and productivity maintained. This recovery won’t happen in an instant, but it will happen. Continue to genuinely affirm the work of your team and hang in there.
